Cluster reduction
Cluster reduction is a phonological process in which a child simplifies a consonant cluster by deleting one of its consonants — "spoon" becomes "poon", "stop" becomes "top", and "blue" becomes "boo". Clusters without /s/ typically resolve by around age 4, and /s/-clusters by around age 5.
In plain English
Two consonants in a row have to be produced back to back with no vowel between them, which means one articulatory gesture has to end and the next begin in a very short window. Dropping one of them removes the timing problem entirely.

When it typically resolves
Cluster reduction typically resolves around 4 years for non-/s/ clusters, around 5 years for /s/-clusters.
Why it happens
- Clusters demand precise inter-gestural timing: the child must sequence two consonant targets with no intervening vowel to buffer them.
- Which consonant survives is not random — children usually keep the one that is easier or more salient, so /s/-clusters lose the /s/ while /l/- and /r/-clusters usually lose the liquid.
- A cluster containing a sound the child has not yet acquired at all (like /ɹ/ in "truck") will reduce for that reason alone, which is why cluster reduction often co-occurs with gliding.
- Word-final clusters ("desk", "jumped") tend to resolve later than word-initial ones, and in English many final clusters carry grammatical endings, so persistent final-cluster reduction can look like a grammar problem when it is a phonological one.
When it is a concern
- Non-/s/ clusters are still being reduced after about age 4, or /s/-clusters after about age 5.
- The child deletes both consonants rather than keeping one, which is a more atypical pattern.
- Cluster reduction is affecting grammatical endings — "jumped" as "jump" — in a way that makes the child's language sound less mature than it is.
- It combines with other processes so that connected speech is hard for unfamiliar listeners to follow.
How clinicians treat it
- Complexity-based target selection: some evidence suggests that treating a harder cluster first can produce broader generalisation than starting with the easiest target, though this is an approach an SLP weighs case by case.
- Cluster-specific minimal pairs, contrasting the reduced and full forms directly — "poon/spoon", "top/stop", "boo/blue".
- Inserting a brief schwa between the consonants ("suh-poon") and then progressively shortening it until the cluster is produced cleanly.
- Explicitly targeting the missing consonant in isolation first if the child has not yet acquired it at all.

- Cluster reduction is an omission, and omissions are the error type our engine handles best of the four we measured — the deleted consonant leaves no acoustic evidence over the aligned span, so the alignment and the score both register the gap.
- ArticScore scores every phoneme of the target word, including each member of a cluster separately, so "spoon" returns rows for /s/, /p/, /uː/, and /n/ and an app can report specifically that the /s/ was missing rather than that the word was wrong.
- Because the engine reports per-phone timing alongside the score, an app can also show a parent where in the word the sound was expected.
