Phonological Processes in Children's Speech

A phonological process is a systematic simplification pattern that a young child uses while learning to talk — an entire class of sounds is replaced, dropped, or shifted in a predictable way rather than a single word being mispronounced — and each pattern is expected to resolve by a predictable age as the child's speech develops.

Fronting is a phonological process in which a child replaces a sound made at the back of the mouth with one made at the front — most often /k/ becomes /t/ and /g/ becomes /d/, so "cup" is produced as "tup" and "go" as "doe".

Cluster reduction is a phonological process in which a child simplifies a consonant cluster by deleting one of its consonants — "spoon" becomes "poon", "stop" becomes "top", and "blue" becomes "boo".

Final consonant deletion is a phonological process in which a child omits the consonant at the end of a word, producing "cat" as "ca" and "dog" as "do".

A process is a pattern, not a single wrong sound

The distinction matters clinically. A child who mispronounces one sound in isolation has an articulation error. A child who applies the same simplification across a whole class of sounds — every velar fronted, every fricative stopped — has a pattern, and clinicians treat the pattern rather than each sound separately. That is why therapy for these patterns so often uses minimal pairs and cycles approaches rather than drilling one sound at a time.

It also changes what useful software looks like. Scoring a whole word tells you the word was wrong; scoring every phoneme in the word lets an application see that several velar targets in one session all scored low, which is the shape of a pattern rather than a one-off slip.

What is a phonological process?

Each pattern is expected to resolve by a particular age as the child's speech motor control and phonological system mature.
Which phonological processes are normal in a young child?
Fronting, stopping, cluster reduction, final consonant deletion, and gliding all occur in typically developing children. What distinguishes typical from atypical is mainly timing: each pattern has an approximate age by which it is expected to have resolved, and gliding of /r/ is expected to persist the longest — commonly cited as around ages 6 to 7.
When should I be concerned about a phonological process?
The common triggers for seeking an evaluation are a pattern persisting past its typical resolution age, several patterns occurring together, intelligibility that unfamiliar listeners struggle with, or the loss of a contrast the child had already acquired. None of these is a diagnosis on its own — only a licensed speech-language pathologist can determine whether a pattern is atypical.
Are the age norms on these pages exact?
No. Developmental norms for phonological processes vary between published sources by several months, and individual children vary more than that. Every age on this site is written as approximate and is presented as a reason to consider an evaluation, not as a threshold that defines a disorder.
Can software identify phonological processes automatically?
Partly, and unevenly by pattern. Omissions such as cluster reduction and final consonant deletion leave no acoustic evidence where a sound was expected, which is the most tractable case. Substitutions such as fronting and gliding are harder — in our own evaluation, both our engine and the commercial API we benchmarked against detected 3 of 19 labelled substitutions. Distortions are effectively invisible to phoneme-based scoring altogether.
