Why SLPs go looking in the first place

Boom Cards is a genuinely good platform with an enormous library — these are the specific limits that send therapists looking for something else, all taken from Boom’s own documentation.

It needs the internet, every time

Boom Cards play in a browser or the tablet apps, and both require a live connection. There is no offline mode. If your building's wifi drops mid-session, the deck stops. You can print a deck to PDF, but that is a static handout, not the interactive activity.

Reports are a paid feature

Boom's own help center is blunt about it: access to reports is a paid feature. As of its December 2025 terms, an unpaid Starter account gets FastPlay pins good for five days, and Boom states plainly that FastPlay does not record student progress. Prep mode is watermarked and not for use with students.

The membership does not include the decks

This surprises almost everyone. Boom's help center states that a membership does not include access to purchased decks, because decks are sold separately. You pay for the platform, then pay again — usually in Points — for each deck you want.

The voice memo is not an assessment

Boom's recorder lets a student listen back to themselves for a few seconds. Per Boom's documentation the recordings do not save and the therapist cannot access them, so there is nothing to review after the session and nothing to score.

Inactive accounts get swept

Boom warns that inactive accounts and their decks are deleted, and asks users to sign in at least once every six months. For a therapist who buys decks in the spring and picks them back up in the fall, that is a real risk to a paid library.

No adaptive difficulty, no scoring

Boom decks branch only where an author manually builds branching. Nothing on the platform adapts to how a student is performing, and no Boom documentation describes automated pronunciation scoring.
