The long "ay" in cake, rain, play and day. It is a diphthong — a vowel that glides: the tongue starts in the "eh" position and slides up toward "ee" inside a single syllable.
How to Make the Long A Sound
Have your child stretch the sound out slowly so they can hear the glide ("eh-ee"), then speed it up until it is one smooth sound. A flat, non-gliding version sounds like the short E in "bed".
IPA Symbol: /eɪ/
Most children master the long A sound by age 3. Vowels come in earlier than most consonants: children generally have their full vowel system before the late-developing consonants such as /R/, /S/ and /TH/. Vowel errors are far less common than consonant errors, so one that is still there in a school-age child is worth raising with a speech-language pathologist.
Common Long A Sound Errors
