GL Blend: Speech Therapy Guide, Words & Games

The /gl/ blend is written /ɡl/ in the phonetic alphabet, and most children master it by age 6. This guide covers how to make the /gl/ blend, 25 practice words split across initial and medial position, and the errors children make most often.

Example GL Blend words: glad, glasses, glory, gloves (beginning); english, england, douglas, sunglasses (middle).

The /gl/ blend joins the /g/ and /l/ sounds — the "gl" in glue, glass, glow and glove. It is the voiced partner of /cl/: the same two tongue positions, back then front, with the voice on the whole way through.

Age of mastery:6
Sound type:Consonant blend

How to Make the GL Blend

If your child already has /cl/, this is a small step: say "clue", then keep the voice running from the very beginning to turn it into "glue". A hand on the throat makes the difference obvious.

IPA Symbol: /ɡl/

Most children master the /gl/ blend by age 6. Blends arrive after the sounds they are made of: the /G/ and /L/ sounds each have to be reliable on their own before the cluster will hold, which is also the order to practise them in. Two-sound blends are generally in place somewhere between ages 4 and 7, tracking the sounds inside them — the ones containing /L/ or /R/ come in later than the rest.

Common GL Blend Errors

  • Cluster reduction — producing only the /G/ sound and dropping the rest of the blend. This is by far the most common blend error.
  • Cluster reduction — producing only the /L/ sound and dropping the rest of the blend. This is by far the most common blend error.
  • Gliding — the /L/ inside the blend turning into a /W/, so the cluster keeps both sounds but loses the /L/.
