GW Blend: Speech Therapy Guide, Words & Games
The /gw/ blend is written /ɡw/ in the phonetic alphabet, and most children master it by age 5. This guide covers how to make the /gw/ blend, 11 practice words split across medial position, and the errors children make most often.
Example GW Blend words: language, distinguished, languages, penguin (middle).
The /gw/ blend joins the /g/ and /w/ sounds — the "gu" in language, penguin, iguana and Gwen. It is the voiced partner of /kw/, and in English it turns up in the middle of words far more often than at the start.
How to Make the GW Blend
Because most /gw/ words carry the cluster in the middle, practise the whole word rather than the cluster alone: "pen-gwin", "lan-gwage". If /kw/ is already there, "quick" said with the voice on from the very start is the bridge across.
IPA Symbol: /ɡw/
Most children master the /gw/ blend by age 5. Blends arrive after the sounds they are made of: the /G/ and /W/ sounds each have to be reliable on their own before the cluster will hold, which is also the order to practise them in. Two-sound blends are generally in place somewhere between ages 4 and 7, tracking the sounds inside them — the ones containing /L/ or /R/ come in later than the rest.
Common GW Blend Errors
- Cluster reduction — producing only the /G/ sound and dropping the rest of the blend. This is by far the most common blend error.
- Cluster reduction — producing only the /W/ sound and dropping the rest of the blend. This is by far the most common blend error.
- Substituting the /K/ sound for one of the sounds inside /gw/.
