KW Blend: Speech Therapy Guide, Words & Games
The /kw/ blend is written /kw/ in the phonetic alphabet, and most children master it by age 5. This guide covers how to make the /kw/ blend, 28 practice words split across initial and medial position, and the errors children make most often.
Example KW Blend words: quite, question, questions, quiet (beginning); request, equipment, headquarters, awkward (middle).
The /kw/ blend joins the /k/ and /w/ sounds and is almost always spelled "qu" — queen, quick, question, quiet. That spelling is why it earns its own target: a child can have both /k/ and /w/ and still stumble on "qu" words, because the letter looks like neither sound.
How to Make the KW Blend
Say it as what it is — "k" plus "w" — and show your child that "qu" is two sounds wearing one costume: "k…w…een". The lips round visibly for the /w/, so a mirror helps. If the /w/ is dropped the word becomes "keen", which makes a useful pair to contrast.
IPA Symbol: /kw/
Most children master the /kw/ blend by age 5. Blends arrive after the sounds they are made of: the /K/ and /W/ sounds each have to be reliable on their own before the cluster will hold, which is also the order to practise them in. Two-sound blends are generally in place somewhere between ages 4 and 7, tracking the sounds inside them — the ones containing /L/ or /R/ come in later than the rest.
Common KW Blend Errors
- Cluster reduction — producing only the /K/ sound and dropping the rest of the blend. This is by far the most common blend error.
- Cluster reduction — producing only the /W/ sound and dropping the rest of the blend. This is by far the most common blend error.
