Schwa Sound: Speech Therapy Guide, Words & Games
The schwa sound is written /ə/ in the phonetic alphabet, and most children master it by age 3. This guide covers how to make the schwa sound, 42 practice words split across initial, medial, and final position, and the errors children make most often.
Example Schwa words: and, about, away, another (beginning); little, people, hello, happened (middle); gonna, gotta, wanna, idea (end).
The schwa is the quiet, unstressed "uh" at the start of "about", the end of "sofa" and the middle of "banana". It is the most common vowel sound in English: almost any vowel letter reduces to schwa when its syllable is unstressed. It is the same mouth shape as the short U in "cup", just shorter, quieter and never stressed.
How to Make the Schwa Sound
Schwa is about rhythm more than articulation. If your child says every syllable with equal weight ("BA-NA-NA"), practise clapping the strong beat and letting the other syllables go soft and quick. Over-pronouncing schwa is far more common than being unable to make it.
IPA Symbol: /ə/
Most children master the schwa sound by age 3. Vowels come in earlier than most consonants: children generally have their full vowel system before the late-developing consonants such as /R/, /S/ and /TH/. Vowel errors are far less common than consonant errors, so one that is still there in a school-age child is worth raising with a speech-language pathologist.
Common Schwa Sound Errors
- Substituting the short U sound (Short U as in cup) for the schwa sound.
- Substituting the short A sound (Short A as in cat) for the schwa sound.
