SCR Blend: Speech Therapy Guide, Words & Games

The /scr/ blend is written /skɹ/ in the phonetic alphabet, and most children master it by age 8. This guide covers how to make the /scr/ blend, 23 practice words split across initial and medial position, and the errors children make most often.

Example SCR Blend words: screaming, scream, screen, script (beginning); describe, description, described, prescription (middle).

The /scr/ cluster is three sounds in a row — /s/, /k/ and /r/ — as in scream, scratch, screen and scrub. The tongue starts forward for the /s/, jumps to the back for the /k/, and then takes up the /r/ shape, all inside one syllable, which is why it lands among the very last clusters at 7 to 9 years.

Age of mastery:8
Sound type:Consonant blend

How to Make the SCR Blend

Build from /sk/ and add the /r/ — "sk…rrr…eam" — and slow the tongue journey down so each of the three positions actually happens. If it comes out as "kream" the /s/ is being dropped; if as "scweam", the /r/ singleton needs work.

IPA Symbol: /skɹ/

Most children master the /scr/ blend by age 8. Blends arrive after the sounds they are made of: the /S/, /K/ and /R/ sounds each have to be reliable on their own before the cluster will hold, which is also the order to practise them in. Three-sound clusters like this one are the last thing English-speaking children master, typically between 7 and 9, so a six-year-old who cannot say it yet is squarely within the normal range.

Common SCR Blend Errors

  • Reducing /scr/ to the shorter /sk/ blend — one of the three sounds dropped, but not the whole cluster.
  • Reducing /scr/ to the shorter /cr/ blend — one of the three sounds dropped, but not the whole cluster.
  • Cluster reduction — producing only the /S/ sound and dropping the rest of the blend. This is by far the most common blend error.
  • Cluster reduction — producing only the /R/ sound and dropping the rest of the blend. This is by far the most common blend error.
