SL Blend: Speech Therapy Guide, Words & Games
The /sl/ blend is written /sl/ in the phonetic alphabet, and most children master it by age 6. This guide covers how to make the /sl/ blend, 28 practice words split across initial and medial position, and the errors children make most often.
Example SL Blend words: sleep, slow, sleeping, slept (beginning); seriously, obviously, asleep, useless (middle).
The /sl/ blend joins the /s/ and /l/ sounds — the "sl" in slide, sleep, slow and sled. It arrives later than the other s-blends because /l/ itself is a later sound: the tongue tip has to stay up and let the voice flow around the sides of the tongue.
How to Make the SL Blend
Only work on /sl/ once your child has a reliable /l/ on its own. Then hold "ssss", keep the tongue tip in the same forward place, and simply turn the voice on and drop the sides of the tongue: "ssss-llll-ide". A /w/ creeping in ("swide") means the /l/ is the piece to go back to.
IPA Symbol: /sl/
Most children master the /sl/ blend by age 6. Blends arrive after the sounds they are made of: the /S/ and /L/ sounds each have to be reliable on their own before the cluster will hold, which is also the order to practise them in. Two-sound blends are generally in place somewhere between ages 4 and 7, tracking the sounds inside them — the ones containing /L/ or /R/ come in later than the rest.
Common SL Blend Errors
- Cluster reduction — producing only the /L/ sound and dropping the rest of the blend. This is by far the most common blend error.
- Cluster reduction — producing only the /S/ sound and dropping the rest of the blend. This is by far the most common blend error.
- Gliding — the /L/ inside the blend turning into a /W/, so the cluster keeps both sounds but loses the /L/.
