SM Blend: Speech Therapy Guide, Words & Games
The /sm/ blend is written /sm/ in the phonetic alphabet, and most children master it by age 5. This guide covers how to make the /sm/ blend, 28 practice words split across initial and medial position, and the errors children make most often.
Example SM Blend words: small, smart, smell, smoke (beginning); christmas, basement, dismissed, policeman (middle).
The /sm/ blend joins the /s/ and /m/ sounds — the "sm" in smile, small, smoke and smell. The lips close for the /m/ while the voice turns on, so unlike the s + stop blends this one moves straight from a hissy sound into a humming one.
How to Make the SM Blend
Have your child hold "ssss" and then close the lips and hum: "ssss-mmm-ile". Because /m/ is voiced and easy, most children keep it and drop the /s/ — so the practice is really about starting the word on a long, deliberate /s/.
IPA Symbol: /sm/
Most children master the /sm/ blend by age 5. Blends arrive after the sounds they are made of: the /S/ and /M/ sounds each have to be reliable on their own before the cluster will hold, which is also the order to practise them in. Two-sound blends are generally in place somewhere between ages 4 and 7, tracking the sounds inside them — the ones containing /L/ or /R/ come in later than the rest.
Common SM Blend Errors
- Cluster reduction — producing only the /M/ sound and dropping the rest of the blend. This is by far the most common blend error.
- Cluster reduction — producing only the /S/ sound and dropping the rest of the blend. This is by far the most common blend error.
