SP Blend: Speech Therapy Guide, Words & Games

The /sp/ blend is written /sp/ in the phonetic alphabet, and most children master it by age 5. This guide covers how to make the /sp/ blend, 36 practice words split across initial, medial, and final position, and the errors children make most often.

Example SP Blend words: speak, special, spend, spent (beginning); hospital, expect, respect, especially (middle); grasp, crisp, gasp, wasp (end).

The /sp/ blend joins the /s/ and /p/ sounds with no vowel in between — the "sp" in spoon, spider, spot and space. The /s/ hisses first and the lips close straight onto the /p/ while the air is still flowing, so the two sounds share one breath.

How to Make the SP Blend

Start from a /s/ your child can already hold: stretch "ssss", then close the lips onto the /p/ without stopping the air — "ssss-poon", then faster until it is one movement. If the /s/ disappears ("poon"), go back to holding the "ssss" for a full two seconds before adding the /p/, so the cluster starts from the sound that is being dropped.

IPA Symbol: /sp/

Most children master the /sp/ blend by age 5. Blends arrive after the sounds they are made of: the /S/ and /P/ sounds each have to be reliable on their own before the cluster will hold, which is also the order to practise them in. Two-sound blends are generally in place somewhere between ages 4 and 7, tracking the sounds inside them — the ones containing /L/ or /R/ come in later than the rest.

Common SP Blend Errors

  • Cluster reduction — producing only the /P/ sound and dropping the rest of the blend. This is by far the most common blend error.
  • Cluster reduction — producing only the /S/ sound and dropping the rest of the blend. This is by far the most common blend error.
