SPR Blend: Speech Therapy Guide, Words & Games

The /spr/ blend is written /spɹ/ in the phonetic alphabet, and most children master it by age 8. This guide covers how to make the /spr/ blend, 9 practice words split across initial and medial position, and the errors children make most often.

Example SPR Blend words: spring, spread, springs, springtime (beginning); express, expression, widespread, disprove (middle).

The /spr/ cluster is three sounds in a row — /s/, /p/ and /r/ — as in spring, spray and spread. Three-element clusters are the last thing English-speaking children master, typically somewhere between 7 and 9 years old, because all three sounds have to be produced inside a single syllable onset with no vowel to rest on.

How to Make the SPR Blend

Build it from the two-element blend your child already has rather than from scratch: get /sp/ solid, then add the /r/ on the end — "sp…rrr…ing". If either /sp/ or the /r/ singleton is shaky, go back to that piece; a three-element cluster will not hold on a foundation that is not there.

IPA Symbol: /spɹ/

Most children master the /spr/ blend by age 8. Blends arrive after the sounds they are made of: the /S/, /P/ and /R/ sounds each have to be reliable on their own before the cluster will hold, which is also the order to practise them in. Three-sound clusters like this one are the last thing English-speaking children master, typically between 7 and 9, so a six-year-old who cannot say it yet is squarely within the normal range.

Common SPR Blend Errors

  • Reducing /spr/ to the shorter /sp/ blend — one of the three sounds dropped, but not the whole cluster.
  • Reducing /spr/ to the shorter /pr/ blend — one of the three sounds dropped, but not the whole cluster.
  • Cluster reduction — producing only the /S/ sound and dropping the rest of the blend. This is by far the most common blend error.
  • Cluster reduction — producing only the /R/ sound and dropping the rest of the blend. This is by far the most common blend error.
