SQU Blend: Speech Therapy Guide, Words & Games
The /squ/ blend is written /skw/ in the phonetic alphabet, and most children master it by age 7. This guide covers how to make the /squ/ blend, 14 practice words split across initial position, and the errors children make most often.

The /squ/ cluster, written "squ" and said /skw/, is three sounds in a row — /s/, /k/ and /w/ — as in square, squirrel, squeeze and squash. It is the easiest of the three-element clusters because the last sound is /w/, an early one, so it usually arrives a little ahead of /str/ and /scr/.
How to Make the SQU Blend
Build from /sk/ and round the lips for the /w/ at the end — "sk…w…are". The lip rounding is visible, so a mirror genuinely helps with this one. Look out for it reducing to "kware" (the /s/ dropped) rather than to a /w/ error.

Most children master the /squ/ blend by age 7. Blends arrive after the sounds they are made of: the /S/, /K/ and /W/ sounds each have to be reliable on their own before the cluster will hold, which is also the order to practise them in. Three-sound clusters like this one are the last thing English-speaking children master, typically between 7 and 9, so a six-year-old who cannot say it yet is squarely within the normal range.
Common SQU Blend Errors
- Reducing /squ/ to the shorter /sk/ blend — one of the three sounds dropped, but not the whole cluster.
- Cluster reduction — producing only the /S/ sound and dropping the rest of the blend. This is by far the most common blend error.
- Cluster reduction — producing only the /K/ sound and dropping the rest of the blend. This is by far the most common blend error.
- Cluster reduction — producing only the /W/ sound and dropping the rest of the blend. This is by far the most common blend error.
