ST Blend: Speech Therapy Guide, Words & Games

The /st/ blend is written /st/ in the phonetic alphabet, and most children master it by age 5. This guide covers how to make the /st/ blend, 42 practice words split across initial, medial, and final position, and the errors children make most often.

Example ST Blend words: still, stop, stay, start (beginning); understand, sister, mistake, yesterday (middle); just, first, last, must (end).

The /st/ blend joins the /s/ and /t/ sounds — the "st" in star, stop, stand and story. It is also one of the most common ways English ends a word (fast, best, most), so it is worth practising at both ends of the word.

Age of mastery:5
Sound type:Consonant blend

How to Make the ST Blend

Hold "ssss" and then tap the tongue tip up for the /t/ without letting the air stop: "ssss-tar". Final /st/ is a different job — there the risk is the word trailing off into "fas". Ask your child to finish the word with a crisp /t/ they can hear.

IPA Symbol: /st/

Most children master the /st/ blend by age 5. Blends arrive after the sounds they are made of: the /S/ and /T/ sounds each have to be reliable on their own before the cluster will hold, which is also the order to practise them in. Two-sound blends are generally in place somewhere between ages 4 and 7, tracking the sounds inside them — the ones containing /L/ or /R/ come in later than the rest.

Common ST Blend Errors

  • Cluster reduction — producing only the /T/ sound and dropping the rest of the blend. This is by far the most common blend error.
  • Cluster reduction — producing only the /S/ sound and dropping the rest of the blend. This is by far the most common blend error.
