SW Blend: Speech Therapy Guide, Words & Games
The /sw/ blend is written /sw/ in the phonetic alphabet, and most children master it by age 5. This guide covers how to make the /sw/ blend, 23 practice words split across initial and medial position, and the errors children make most often.
Example SW Blend words: sweet, sweetheart, sweetie, swim (beginning); password, persuade, elsewhere, maxwell (middle).
The /sw/ blend joins the /s/ and /w/ sounds — the "sw" in swing, swim, sweet and switch. The lips are spread for the /s/ and then round tightly for the /w/, so this blend is unusually easy to see.
How to Make the SW Blend
Use a mirror for this one: the lips visibly change shape halfway through. Hold "ssss" with a smile, then push the lips into a small circle for the /w/ and carry straight on into the vowel — "ssss-wing".
IPA Symbol: /sw/
Most children master the /sw/ blend by age 5. Blends arrive after the sounds they are made of: the /S/ and /W/ sounds each have to be reliable on their own before the cluster will hold, which is also the order to practise them in. Two-sound blends are generally in place somewhere between ages 4 and 7, tracking the sounds inside them — the ones containing /L/ or /R/ come in later than the rest.
Common SW Blend Errors
- Cluster reduction — producing only the /W/ sound and dropping the rest of the blend. This is by far the most common blend error.
- Cluster reduction — producing only the /S/ sound and dropping the rest of the blend. This is by far the most common blend error.
