THR Blend: Speech Therapy Guide, Words & Games
The /thr/ blend is written /θɹ/ in the phonetic alphabet, and most children master it by age 8. This guide covers how to make the /thr/ blend, 21 practice words split across initial and medial position, and the errors children make most often.
Example THR Blend words: through, threw, throat, throwing (beginning); bathroom, breakthrough, bathrooms, arthritis (middle).
The /thr/ cluster joins the voiceless "th" and the /r/ — the "thr" in three, throw, through and thread. The tongue tip has to come right out between the teeth for the /θ/ and then pull back and bunch up for the /r/, which is one of the longest journeys any English cluster asks for.
How to Make the THR Blend
Both halves have to be solid first, and they need opposite practice: a child who says "free" for "three" has a /th/ problem, one who says "thwee" has a /r/ problem. Once both are there, hold the "th" with the tongue visible between the teeth, then pull it back for a long "rrr" — "th…rrr…ee".
IPA Symbol: /θɹ/
Most children master the /thr/ blend by age 8. Blends arrive after the sounds they are made of: the /TH/ and /R/ sounds each have to be reliable on their own before the cluster will hold, which is also the order to practise them in. Two-sound blends are generally in place somewhere between ages 4 and 7, tracking the sounds inside them — the ones containing /L/ or /R/ come in later than the rest.
Common THR Blend Errors
- Cluster reduction — producing only the /TH/ sound and dropping the rest of the blend. This is by far the most common blend error.
- Cluster reduction — producing only the /R/ sound and dropping the rest of the blend. This is by far the most common blend error.
- Substituting the /F/ sound for one of the sounds inside /thr/.
- Gliding — the /R/ inside the blend turning into a /W/, so the cluster keeps both sounds but loses the /R/.
