TW Blend: Speech Therapy Guide, Words & Games
The /tw/ blend is written /tw/ in the phonetic alphabet, and most children master it by age 5. This guide covers how to make the /tw/ blend, 24 practice words split across initial and medial position, and the errors children make most often.
Example TW Blend words: twice, twenty, twelve, twins (beginning); between, network, software, networks (middle).
The /tw/ blend joins the /t/ and /w/ sounds — the "tw" in twin, twelve, twenty and twist. The tongue tip taps for the /t/ and the lips round straight away for the /w/, so the two halves happen in completely different places, and both are early sounds.
How to Make the TW Blend
This is one of the easier clusters, and the lip rounding is visible, so a mirror works well: tap the /t/, then push the lips into a small circle. If the /w/ disappears — "tin" for "twin" — slow the pair right down and exaggerate the lip movement.
IPA Symbol: /tw/
Most children master the /tw/ blend by age 5. Blends arrive after the sounds they are made of: the /T/ and /W/ sounds each have to be reliable on their own before the cluster will hold, which is also the order to practise them in. Two-sound blends are generally in place somewhere between ages 4 and 7, tracking the sounds inside them — the ones containing /L/ or /R/ come in later than the rest.
Common TW Blend Errors
- Cluster reduction — producing only the /T/ sound and dropping the rest of the blend. This is by far the most common blend error.
- Cluster reduction — producing only the /W/ sound and dropping the rest of the blend. This is by far the most common blend error.
