Articulation Station Alternatives

The verdict, up front

SpeechTherapyMagic is the alternative for SLPs and parents on Chromebooks, Android or any browser who want each spoken word scored ($9.99/month or $79.99/year); stay with Articulation Station if you work on iPads and want its full isolation-to-conversation hierarchy.

Articulation Station Hive ($119.99/year for professionals) is a thorough articulation program. People look elsewhere because it runs only on Apple devices, because every response is scored by hand, or because they need more than articulation. Each pick below solves one of those.

We build SpeechTherapyMagic and are not affiliated with any other product here. Prices were checked on each vendor’s own site or store listing in October 2026.

The six alternatives, reviewed

1

SpeechTherapyMagic

Best for: Articulation practice in a browser that scores each word, on Chromebooks and Android too

A browser-based speech-practice platform: games where the child says the word and gets a score out of 100 with a score for each sound in it, 9,200+ practice words with pictures across all 40 English sounds (24 consonants, 11 vowels, 5 diphthongs) and 30 consonant blends, by word position, printable worksheets, a deck builder (Magic Studio), and progress saved by sound and word position.

Pricing: A 7-day free trial with no card needed, then $9.99/month or $79.99/year ($6.67/month billed yearly). There is no free plan. 3 student profiles included; extra students are $4.99/month each, up to 10 in total.

What works

  • Scores every spoken attempt automatically, so practice between sessions still produces data
  • Runs in any modern browser: Chromebook, iPad, Android tablet, laptop or phone
  • A 7-day trial of everything with no card, then one plan with nothing to buy per activity
  • Build your own interactive decks in Magic Studio and share them by link

What to watch out for

  • A much smaller library than the big materials sites, and speech-sound first
  • 3 students included; extras cost $4.99/month each and the cap is 10, so it is not built for a school caseload
  • The score is practice feedback, not an assessment: it is not validated on disordered child speech and does not detect distortions
  • Needs a microphone, a fairly quiet room and an internet connection. No offline mode
2

Articulate Plus (Smarty Ears)

Best for: A one-time purchase artic app with position and level tracking

Smarty Ears' articulation app, the successor to Articulate it! (which is no longer on the App Store). It tracks correct, approximate and incorrect productions by word position and by word, phrase and sentence level, with audio recording, notes and groups of up to 6.

Pricing: $49.99 one-time on the App Store, with no in-app purchases listed.

What works

  • Pay once, no subscription
  • Accuracy by initial, medial and final position at word, phrase and sentence level
  • Runs on iPhone, iPad and Apple Silicon Macs, with printable or emailed reports

What to watch out for

  • Apple only: no Android and no browser version
  • Scoring is by the clinician; the app makes no speech-recognition claim
  • Very few App Store ratings (one, at 1 star, after a recent update), so check it yourself
3

Speech Blubs

Best for: Video modelling for toddlers and young children at home

A phone and tablet app for children 1–8 in which real children model each word on video. It has 1,500+ exercises and activities, face filters, and a voice feature that listens for the word and pops a star when it hears it. Its website also offers a free AI Articulation Screener for parents.

Pricing: $14.99/month or $59.99/year on its website (the US App Store lists $14.49/month), with a 7-day free trial. Its SLP app, Speech Blubs Pro, is free on iPad.

What works

  • Video modelling with real children, which young children copy readily
  • Polished and well rated: 4.6 stars from 58K App Store ratings
  • Made for parents: no setup, and new content every week

What to watch out for

  • Phones and tablets only; its FAQ says it does not run on desktop computers
  • Ages 1–8, so older children age out quickly
  • Its speech recognition listens for the word; it does not score each sound in it
4

Boom Cards

Best for: The largest library of interactive decks, for every subject

A platform for self-checking interactive decks written by independent authors. A membership unlocks the platform and reports; the decks themselves are bought separately in the Boom Store with Points, though some are free.

Pricing: Free Limited tier (up to 5 students); Core $29.99/year (up to 30 students, reports); Premium $49.99/year or $6.99/month (up to 150 students); Publisher $69.99/year to sell. Decks cost extra.

What works

  • Boom says it has more than 500,000 decks across every subject and grade
  • Runs in browsers and on iOS, Android and Kindle Fire apps
  • Boom Studio lets you build, and on Publisher sell, your own decks

What to watch out for

  • The membership does not include the decks, so the real cost depends on what you buy
  • Needs an internet connection; voice memos are not saved and instructors cannot hear them
  • FastPlay links do not record student data
5

Ultimate SLP

Best for: A big real-photo materials library for one flat fee

A web-based subscription library of real-photo flash cards, built-in card decks and online games for articulation, language and social communication, preschool through high school.

Pricing: $12.95/month or $139.92/year, after a 14-day free trial. Group quotes for teams.

What works

  • Its homepage claims over 40,000 real-life images, 30,000+ flash cards and 500+ built-in card decks
  • Online games for up to 6 players, useful in groups
  • One flat price with no per-student charge stated

What to watch out for

  • No progress tracking or data collection described on its site
  • No feedback on how a word was said
  • Its own homepage gives two different counts for images (10,000+ and 40,000+) and games (55+ and 100+)
6

Otsimo Speech Therapy

Best for: A low-cost phone app with speech recognition for young children

A phone and tablet app for children roughly 1 to 8 that says it uses voice and speech recognition to check whether a word was said, with word and sound games.

Pricing: Free download; the US App Store lists subscriptions from $6.99 to $14.99 a month, $41.99 to $53.99 a year, and $119.99 lifetime.

What works

  • Several price points, including a lifetime purchase
  • iOS and Android, phones and tablets
  • Listens to the child rather than leaving every judgment to the adult

What to watch out for

  • Rated 3.4 on the App Store (179 ratings) and 3.1 on Google Play
  • Last updated in May 2025, with only bug fixes in the notes
  • No desktop or Chromebook version, and it publishes no accuracy figures for its recognition

What automatic scoring looks like

Real SpeechTherapyMagic screens on a phone. The child says the word, gets a score, and can open a score for each sound.

Beanstalk Bounce on a phone: a picture of soup, the word soup and a Tap to record button
A game asks for the word…
Pronunciation practice result for the word soap: 94 out of 100
…scores the attempt out of 100…
The sound breakdown for soap: a score for /s/, /ow/ and /p/
…and shows a score for each sound in the word.

How we compared these

Each option was checked on what devices it runs on, what a year costs, whether it judges a spoken word or leaves that to you, what it records, and whether it covers more than articulation. Prices and claims came from each vendor’s own site, help center or store listing in October 2026. Articulate it!, which older lists still recommend, is no longer on the App Store, so we list its successor, Articulate Plus.

We build SpeechTherapyMagic, so weigh our entry accordingly. For a direct comparison see SpeechTherapyMagic vs Articulation Station.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there an Articulation Station for Android or Chromebook?
No. Little Bee Speech says its apps run only on iPhone, iPad and Apple Silicon Macs (plus Vision Pro), with no Android app and no browser version. On a Chromebook or Android tablet, look at a browser-based option such as SpeechTherapyMagic, Boom Cards or Ultimate SLP, or at Android apps such as Speech Blubs or Otsimo.
Is there a free alternative to Articulation Station?
Not a full one. Boom Cards has a free Limited tier for up to 5 students, but decks are bought separately and FastPlay records no data. SpeechTherapyMagic has no free plan; it has a 7-day free trial with no card, then $9.99/month or $79.99/year. Articulation Station Classic, the old one-time purchase version, was retired from the App Store on December 3, 2024.
Which alternative scores pronunciation automatically?
SpeechTherapyMagic scores each attempt out of 100, with a score for each sound in the word. Speech Blubs and Otsimo listen for whether the word was said. Articulation Station Hive and Articulate Plus record the attempt and you score it. The score is practice feedback, not an assessment: it is not a clinical measure, it has not been validated on disordered child speech, and it does not detect distortions, so your ear still decides.
What does Articulation Station Hive cost?
The Professional tier is $14.99 a month or $119.99 a year, with unlimited students and groups of up to 6. The Parent tier is $9.99 a month or $83.99 a year for up to 2 students. Both start with a 14-day free trial. Prices are from Little Bee Speech's help center and the US App Store in October 2026.
Should I just stay with Articulation Station?
If you work on iPads and want a complete isolation-to-conversation hierarchy with recordings you can save and score, yes. It is the most complete articulation program here and has unlimited students on the Professional tier. The alternatives win on devices, on automatic scoring, or on breadth beyond articulation.
