How to Make the Long I Sound
Big open mouth first, then a smile — exaggerating the two halves ("ah-ee") and then blending them is the usual route. This diphthong is acquired early and rarely needs direct work.

Most children master the long I sound by age 3. Vowels come in earlier than most consonants: children generally have their full vowel system before the late-developing consonants such as /R/, /S/ and /TH/.
