Best Apps for a Lisp: S and Z Practice (2026)

A lisp is a distortion: the S is made in the wrong place, not swapped for another sound. That matters when choosing an app, because a distortion is exactly what software is worst at hearing. The best lisp apps either show the child how S is made or give them plenty of structured S and Z words, with an adult listening.

The short answer

  1. 1Articulation Station Hive — best for structured S and Z drill with an adult listening. (From $9.99/mo)
  2. 2Speech Therapy Magic — best for S and Z practice volume through games, on any device. ($9.99/mo or $79.99/yr after a 7-day trial)
  3. 3Speech Sounds Visualized — best for showing where the tongue goes for S. ($2.99/mo)
  4. 4Speech Tutor — best for animated side views of S placement. ($24.99 once)
  5. 5LispApp — best for a dedicated S exercise programme (early days). ($34.99/mo)

For structured S and Z drill on an iPad, Articulation Station Hive. For lots of S and Z practice through games on any device, Speech Therapy Magic, with an adult listening for the lisp itself. To show a child where the tongue goes, Speech Sounds Visualized or Speech Tutor.

1

Articulation Station Hive

Best for: structured S and Z drill with an adult listening

Little Bee Speech's articulation app, with S and Z picture cards in every word position and at every level from single words to stories and conversation. The adult marks each attempt, which suits a lisp: a trained ear is the right judge.

Price
Parent $9.99/month or $83.99/year; Pro $14.99/month or $119.99/year (App Store prices), with a 14-day free trial.
Platform
iPhone, iPad and Apple-silicon Mac. No Android or web.

Honest limitation: Apple-only, and it relies on the adult knowing what a clean S sounds like.

2

Speech Therapy MagicOur product

Best for: S and Z practice volume through games, on any device

Speech Cats, an articulation game in Speech Therapy Magic

Pick S or Z and the child plays speech-sound games full of target words in the start, middle and end of words, saying each into the microphone, with every attempt logged by sound and position. Free S and Z word lists and sound guides explain frontal and lateral lisps and how to practise them.

Price
A 7-day free trial of everything with no card needed, then $9.99/month or $79.99/year ($6.67/month billed yearly). There is no free plan.
Platform
Web browser on iPad, iPhone, Android, Chromebook, Mac and PC. No native app yet; it installs to the home screen as a web app.

What it does well

  • Turns S and Z practice into games children will repeat
  • Works on Android tablets and Chromebooks as well as iPads
  • Free word lists and lisp guidance with no account

Honest limitation: The automatic score does not detect a lisp. A lisped S is a distortion, and our scoring does not reliably tell a distorted S from a correct one, so a lisped word can score well. Use it for practice volume with an adult listening, not to judge whether the lisp has gone.

3

Speech Sounds Visualized

Best for: showing where the tongue goes for S

X-ray, 3D and video views of how each English sound is made, with recording, so a child can see why their tongue position is producing a TH-like or slushy S.

Price
Free download; $2.99/month or $29.99/year in the App Store.
Platform
iPhone and iPad.

Honest limitation: A teaching aid with no practice structure or progress data, last updated in March 2025.

4

Speech Tutor

Best for: animated side views of S placement

Animated, see-through views of the mouth for each sound, side by side with video, for teaching placement before practice.

Price
$24.99 one-time in the App Store.
Platform
iPhone and iPad.

Honest limitation: Placement teaching only: no games, levels or data.

5

LispApp

Best for: a dedicated S exercise programme (early days)

A Finnish app built only for S, with exercises for children from about three to teenagers, meant to be done with an adult.

Price
Free download, then a $34.99 monthly subscription in the App Store.
Platform
iPhone and iPad.

Honest limitation: Very new (version 0.1 with one rating when we checked) and expensive for one sound. We could not confirm how well it works.

Frontal or lateral lisp?

A frontal lisp pushes the tongue forward so S sounds like TH. It is common and often outgrown by about age five. A lateral lisp lets air escape over the sides of the tongue and sounds wet or slushy. It is not part of typical development and usually needs therapy at any age.

Because the two need different corrections, have an SLP identify which one your child has before drilling at home. Practising the wrong placement over and over makes it harder to change.

How we chose

We make Speech Therapy Magic, so read our own entry with the scepticism you would give any vendor writing about itself. We placed it where we think it honestly fits for this buyer, which is not always first, and every entry, ours included, carries a real limitation.

For this guide we weighed:

  • Whether it helps a child find the right tongue position, or only practise
  • How much S and Z practice it produces
  • Who judges the S, and how reliable that is for a distortion
  • Price and devices
  • Whether it is maintained

Prices were read off each vendor’s own pricing page or App Store listing in October 2026. Where a vendor only quotes on request or shows prices in local currency, we say so rather than print a number we could not check. Nobody paid to be listed, and there are no affiliate links on this page. Found something out of date? Tell us on the contact page.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best app for a lisp?
For structured S and Z drill on an iPad, Articulation Station Hive. For game-based S and Z practice on any device, Speech Therapy Magic. To see how S is made, Speech Sounds Visualized or Speech Tutor. In every case an adult (ideally guided by an SLP) needs to listen, because no consumer app reliably detects a lisp.
Can an app detect a lisp?
Not reliably. A lisp is a distortion of S or Z rather than a swap for another sound, and the automatic scoring in consumer apps, including ours, does not reliably tell a distorted S from a correct one. Apps are good for practice volume and for showing tongue placement; the judging needs a trained ear.
Will my child grow out of a lisp?
A frontal lisp is common until about age four or five and often resolves on its own. A lateral lisp usually does not, and a lisp of either kind that is still there after about five is worth an evaluation by a speech-language pathologist.
How much does Speech Therapy Magic cost?
Every account starts with a 7-day free trial of everything, with no card needed. After that it is $9.99 a month or $79.99 a year, and you can cancel anytime. There is no free plan, but the S and Z word lists and sound guides are free with no account.
