Buyer’s guide for SLPs •

Best Articulation Apps for SLPs (2026)

Articulation therapy needs a lot of correct productions, a way to move a target up the hierarchy and a record of how it went. No single tool does all three best, so here is which one wins each part of the job, and on which devices.

The short answer

  1. 1Articulation Station Hive Pro — best for the deepest articulation drill hierarchy, on an iPad. ($14.99/mo or $119.99/yr)
  2. 2Speech Therapy Magic — best for articulation games with automatic scoring and per-sound data, in any browser. ($9.99/mo or $79.99/yr after a 7-day trial)
  3. 3Boom Learning (Boom Cards) — best for the largest library of ready-made articulation decks. ($6.99/mo or $49.99/yr + decks)
  4. 4Ga-loo — best for weekly printable articulation packs with a data sheet and home letter. (Free; Pro $9.99/mo)
  5. 5staRt (BITS Lab, NYU) — best for visual biofeedback for a stubborn R. (Free)
  6. 6Speech Tutor — best for showing where the tongue goes. ($24.99 once)

If your students practise on iPads and you want the most structured drill, Articulation Station Hive is the pick. If you are on Chromebooks, want each attempt scored and logged for you, or want to build your own decks, choose Speech Therapy Magic. For a deep library of ready-made decks, Boom.

The 6 picks, reviewed

1

Articulation Station Hive Pro

Best for: the deepest articulation drill hierarchy, on an iPad

Little Bee Speech's articulation app, with every consonant and vowel from isolation through words, phrases, sentences, stories and conversation, unlimited students and group sessions. The Pro membership also includes Articulation Test Center Hive. The clinician scores each production with a tap.

Price
$14.99/month or $119.99/year in the App Store; Little Bee's site lists Pro at $15/month or $10/month billed yearly. 14-day free trial; district pricing on request.
Platform
iPhone, iPad and Apple-silicon Mac. No Android, no browser version.

What it does well

  • The most rigorous level structure of any articulation app
  • Unlimited students and group sessions on Pro
  • Assessment (Test Center) included in the membership

Honest limitation: Apple-only, so it is out for Chromebook districts and for families on Android. Scoring is manual, so the data is only as consistent as each tap.

2

Speech Therapy MagicOur product

Best for: articulation games with automatic scoring and per-sound data, in any browser

Beanstalk Bounce: the child says the word on the golden leaf to keep climbing

Speech-sound games where the student says each target word into the microphone and gets a score with a sound-by-sound breakdown, saved to the student's profile by sound and word position. Magic Studio lets you build your own decks (22 element types, pronunciation targets on any card) and share them by a 6-digit PIN with no student account, and Send home links let a family practise the same targets between sessions.

Price
A 7-day free trial of everything with no card needed, then $9.99/month or $79.99/year ($6.67/month billed yearly). There is no free plan.
Platform
Web browser on iPad, iPhone, Android, Chromebook, Mac and PC. No native app yet; it installs to the home screen as a web app.

What it does well

  • Runs on Chromebooks and school laptops as well as iPads
  • Accuracy by sound, position and session without hand tallies
  • Build a custom deck for one student's targets in minutes

Honest limitation: 3 student profiles are included and extras are $4.99/month each up to 10, so a full school caseload does not fit on one account. The pronunciation score is a practice signal, not a diagnosis. It scores against a fixed set of speech sounds, so a distortion (an almost-right R, a lisped S) is not reliably told apart from a correct sound, and an adult's ear still decides. Our published benchmark shows where it falls short.

3

Boom Learning (Boom Cards)

Best for: the largest library of ready-made articulation decks

A platform for self-checking digital task cards. SLP sellers publish articulation decks for almost every sound and level, and they play in a browser or the Boom apps.

Price
Free Limited account (5 students, 5-day FastPlay pins); Core $29.99/year; Premium $6.99/month or $49.99/year; Publisher $69.99/year. Decks are bought separately in the Boom Store. School plans are quote-only.
Platform
Web browser, plus Boom's tablet apps. Needs an internet connection.

Honest limitation: The membership does not include the decks, so cost adds up deck by deck, and there is no feedback on what the student actually said.

4

Ga-loo

Best for: weekly printable articulation packs with a data sheet and home letter

You set a student's articulation goal once, and each week it builds a practice pack: picture cards, a no-prep game, a data sheet and a home letter, with a screen mode for teletherapy and a graph toward an 80% criterion.

Price
Free plan (5 starter packs, then 3 a month, up to 3 students); Pro $9.99/month or $79/year for up to 60 students.
Platform
Web app with printable PDFs.

Honest limitation: Articulation only, and the output is mostly paper: there is no interactive app for the student.

5

staRt (BITS Lab, NYU)

Best for: visual biofeedback for a stubborn R

A research-built app that shows the student a real-time picture of their own R sound to match against a target, for clinicians treating residual R errors.

Price
Free, with no in-app purchases.
Platform
iPad and Apple-silicon Mac only.

Honest limitation: R only, iPad only, built for clinicians rather than home use, and rarely updated.

6

Speech Tutor

Best for: showing where the tongue goes

Animated, see-through views of the mouth for each English sound, side by side with video, for teaching placement before drill.

Price
$24.99 one-time in the App Store (Speech Tutor Pro, with screeners, is $69.99).
Platform
iPhone and iPad.

Honest limitation: A teaching aid rather than a practice tool: there are no games, levels or data.

Manual or automatic scoring?

Most articulation apps leave the judging to you, which is right in a session: your ear is better than any software at hearing a distortion. Automatic scoring earns its place elsewhere, in independent practice, homework and groups, where nobody is available to judge every word and the alternative is no feedback at all.

Be sceptical of any app that claims to detect distortions or to diagnose. We publish how our engine compares with expert listeners, including where it falls short, on the ArticScore benchmark page.

How we chose

We make Speech Therapy Magic, so read our own entry with the scepticism you would give any vendor writing about itself. We placed it where we think it honestly fits for this buyer, which is not always first, and every entry, ours included, carries a real limitation.

For this guide we weighed:

  • How far the tool takes a sound up the hierarchy (isolation to conversation)
  • What happens to the data: manual tally, logged automatically, or not at all
  • Devices it runs on, including Chromebooks
  • Cost per year for a working SLP, and what the trial includes
  • Whether it is still maintained

Prices were read off each vendor’s own pricing page or App Store listing in October 2026. Where a vendor only quotes on request or shows prices in local currency, we say so rather than print a number we could not check. Nobody paid to be listed, and there are no affiliate links on this page. Found something out of date? Tell us on the contact page.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best articulation app for SLPs?
For structured drill on an iPad, Articulation Station Hive Pro. For articulation games that score each attempt and log it by sound on any device, Speech Therapy Magic. For a large library of ready-made decks, Boom Learning.
Is there an articulation app for Chromebooks?
Articulation Station Hive is Apple-only. Speech Therapy Magic, Boom Learning and Ga-loo all run in a Chromebook browser.
Can an app score articulation automatically?
Speech Therapy Magic scores each spoken attempt against the target sounds and saves the result. It is a practice signal, not a diagnosis: distortions such as an almost-right R or a lisped S are not reliably told apart from a correct sound, so the clinician still decides. Most other articulation apps rely on the clinician tapping correct or incorrect.
How much does Speech Therapy Magic cost for an SLP?
Every account starts with a 7-day free trial of everything, with no card needed. After that it is $9.99 a month or $79.99 a year, and you can cancel anytime. Three student profiles are included, and extra profiles are $4.99 a month each, up to 10.
