Sort, Match & Sequence: Everyday Words

Fifteen cards that turn everyday words into categories, matches and stories.

Fifteen vocabulary cards for Pre-K to 2nd grade built around everyday words: three picture choices (which one is a fruit, an animal, something you wear), two sorting games (food/animal/clothes; kitchen/bedroom), an animal-sound match, two story sequences (getting ready for school, bedtime), two word-meaning questions, two syllable claps and a sentence spinner. About This Deck

Knowing a word is more than naming a picture. Strong vocabulary means knowing what category a word belongs to, what it goes with, and what order things happen in. This deck practises all three with words every child already meets at home: food, animals, clothes, rooms of the house, and the steps of getting ready for school and going to bed.

Three picture-choice cards warm up with category questions (which one is a fruit? an animal? something you wear?). Two drag-and-drop sorts ask the child to file words into food/animal/clothes and kitchen/bedroom. An animal-sound match links each animal to its sound, and two story-sequence cards ask the child to put four pictures in order — a skill that feeds directly into narrative retelling. Two word-meaning questions (a synonym for "big", the opposite of "hot"), two syllable claps and a sentence spinner finish the deck with production.

How to Use It

Use the sorts as a talking activity, not a test. When the child drops a word into a category, ask why ("Why is a sock clothing?") to get a definition out of them.

On the story-sequence cards, narrate the sequence in full after it is correct: "First I wake up, then I brush my teeth, then…". Encourage the child to retell it in their own words with the same connectives.

The spinner at the end lands on a word; the child makes up a sentence with it. Aim for a sentence of five words or more for first and second graders.

Questions About Sort, Match & Sequence: Everyday Words

What vocabulary is in the deck?

Everyday nouns a four-year-old meets: banana, bread, cheese, egg, sandwich, dog, cow, pig, duck, shirt, shoes, hat, coat, pajamas, bed, pillow, teddy, cup, fork, spoon and plate — plus the animal sounds (moo, oink, woof, quack), opposites like hot/cold and big/tiny, and the verbs in the two story sequences.

Is drag-and-drop hard on a phone?

The sort and sequence cards were tested at phone width. Cards are large and can also be tapped in order instead of dragged.

Does it teach reading?

Words are printed under every picture and the syllable cards build phonological awareness, but the deck is a vocabulary deck first. Non-readers can play it entirely by picture.

Can I build a similar deck with my own words?

Yes. Magic Studio has a Sort, Match and Story Sequence element — save this deck to see how each card is built, then duplicate and edit.
