Best Apps for the R Sound (2026)

R is the hardest common sound to fix: the tongue is out of sight, the sound takes many forms (red, car, bird, tree) and an almost-right R is hard even for a trained ear to call. Apps help with two things, seeing the sound and getting enough repetitions of it. These five do one or both well.

The short answer

  1. 1Articulation Station Hive — best for structured R drill from words to conversation. (From $9.99/mo)
  2. 2staRt (BITS Lab, NYU) — best for SLPs using visual biofeedback for residual R errors. (Free)
  3. 3Speech Therapy Magic — best for lots of R repetitions through games, with a score on each word. ($9.99/mo or $79.99/yr after a 7-day trial)
  4. 4Speech Sounds Visualized — best for seeing how R is made inside the mouth. ($2.99/mo)
  5. 5R intensive Pro (Smarty Ears) — best for a one-time purchase of R drill activities. ($21.99 once)

For structured R drill on an iPad, Articulation Station Hive. For an SLP chasing a stubborn residual R, staRt's free biofeedback. For a child who needs hundreds of R words a week and will do them if it is a game, Speech Therapy Magic, with an adult's ear on the almost-right ones.

Prices checked October 2026 on each vendor’s own site. We make Speech Therapy Magic, which is #3 here; see how we chose.

The 5 picks, reviewed

1

Articulation Station Hive

Best for: structured R drill from words to conversation

Little Bee Speech's articulation app with R picture cards in every word position and at every level from single words to stories and conversation. An adult marks each attempt.

Price
Parent $9.99/month or $83.99/year; Pro $14.99/month or $119.99/year (App Store prices), with a 14-day free trial.
Platform
iPhone, iPad and Apple-silicon Mac. No Android or web.

Honest limitation: Apple-only, and the adult is the judge of every R, which is the hardest call to make at home.

2

staRt (BITS Lab, NYU)

Best for: SLPs using visual biofeedback for residual R errors

A free research app that shows the student a live picture of the sound they are making next to a target for a good R, so they can see when they get closer. Built for clinicians, with a clinician dashboard.

Price
Free, with no in-app purchases.
Platform
iPad and Apple-silicon Mac only.

Honest limitation: Designed for use with an SLP rather than by families on their own, iPad only, and rarely updated.

3

Speech Therapy MagicOur product

Best for: lots of R repetitions through games, with a score on each word

Beanstalk Bounce: the child says the word on the golden leaf to keep climbing

Pick R and the child plays speech-sound games built around R words in the start, middle and end of words, saying each one into the microphone. Each attempt gets a score and a sound-by-sound breakdown. It can sometimes name a swapped sound, such as a W said in place of R ("wabbit"), but in our own evaluation it caught only 3 of 19 labelled substitutions, so a grown-up's ear still decides. Every attempt is charted by sound and position.

Price
A 7-day free trial of everything with no card needed, then $9.99/month or $79.99/year ($6.67/month billed yearly). There is no free plan.
Platform
Web browser on iPad, iPhone, Android, Chromebook, Mac and PC. No native app yet; it installs to the home screen as a web app.

What it does well

  • High repetition volume, which is what R progress depends on
  • Free R word lists by position, and a guide to how R develops
  • Works on any device, including Chromebooks

Honest limitation: Its score cannot be trusted on a distorted R. It scores against a fixed set of speech sounds, so an almost-right R is not reliably told apart from a correct one, and an SLP or a trained ear has to decide. Use it for practice volume, not to judge an R that is nearly there.

4

Speech Sounds Visualized

Best for: seeing how R is made inside the mouth

X-ray, 3D and video views of how each English sound is produced, with recording so the child can compare. An R-sound combinations pack covers R in different vowel contexts.

Price
Free download; $2.99/month or $29.99/year, and the R-Sound Combinations pack is $0.99, in the App Store.
Platform
iPhone and iPad.

Honest limitation: A teaching aid, not a practice game: there is no drill structure or progress data, and it was last updated in March 2025.

5

R intensive Pro (Smarty Ears)

Best for: a one-time purchase of R drill activities

Flashcards, matching and Guess What activities for R at word, phrase and sentence level for one to four players, with record and playback. Redesigned in February 2026.

Price
$21.99 one-time in the App Store.
Platform
iPhone and iPad.

Honest limitation: No automatic feedback: the adult judges each R, and it is a narrower activity set than a subscription app.

Why R needs more than an app

Most children master R by about their sixth birthday, though vocalic R (car, bird, bear) can take until about eight. An R that is still wrong at eight is usually a habit years old, and a W-for-R swap and a distorted R need different approaches. An SLP can find the tongue position that works for your child (bunched or retroflex) and the R contexts to start with, often vocalic R in words like car, bear or bird before initial R.

Once there is a correct R to practise, volume is what moves it from the therapy room to conversation. That is where apps earn their keep.

How we chose

We make Speech Therapy Magic, so read our own entry with the scepticism you would give any vendor writing about itself. We placed it where we think it honestly fits for this buyer, which is not always first, and every entry, ours included, carries a real limitation.

For this guide we weighed:

  • Whether it helps a child see or feel a correct R, or only practise it
  • How many R productions a session produces
  • Who judges the R: an adult, biofeedback or automatic scoring, and how reliable that is
  • Price and devices
  • Whether it is still maintained

Prices were read off each vendor’s own pricing page or App Store listing in October 2026. Where a vendor only quotes on request or shows prices in local currency, we say so rather than print a number we could not check. Nobody paid to be listed, and there are no affiliate links on this page. Found something out of date? Tell us on the contact page.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best app for the R sound?
For structured R drill on an iPad, Articulation Station Hive. For visual biofeedback with an SLP, staRt (free, iPad). For game-based R practice with a score on each word on any device, Speech Therapy Magic. For seeing how R is made, Speech Sounds Visualized.
Can an app tell if my child's R is correct?
Partly. Automatic scoring such as Speech Therapy Magic's is designed to catch a W said instead of R, but an almost-right, distorted R is not reliably told apart from a correct one by any consumer app we know of. Biofeedback apps like staRt show the sound visually but are meant to be used with an SLP.
At what age should a child say R correctly?
Most children master R by about their sixth birthday, and some forms of vocalic R (as in car, bird and bear) can take until about eight. If R is still a W or sounds distorted at seven or older, an evaluation by a speech-language pathologist is worth arranging.
How much does Speech Therapy Magic cost?
Every account starts with a 7-day free trial of everything, with no card needed. After that it is $9.99 a month or $79.99 a year, and you can cancel anytime. There is no free plan, but the R word lists and R sound guide are free with no account.
