About This Deck

/r/ is the sound most often referred to speech therapy in English-speaking children, and one of the hardest to teach because it is made with the tongue in a position no one can see. Practice therefore needs many repetitions across many word positions, and it needs to stay fun long enough to get them.

This pack covers /r/ in the initial position (rabbit, rose, ring, race), the medial position (carrot, parrot) and the final position (star, door) across thirteen activity cards. Say-the-word flashcards with a Hear it button give a clear model; multiple-choice quizzes and fill-in-the-blank cards check the child can identify and spell the target words; flip cards and a spinner keep the same words coming back in new formats so the tongue placement becomes automatic.

How to Use It

Work one position at a time. Initial /r/ is usually easiest, so start there and do not move on until the child hits the word cleanly in three of five tries. Final /r/ (star, door) is often the hardest for children who "drop" the sound — spend extra time on those flashcards with the recording button.

Use the quizzes and fill-in-the-blank cards as a check that the child recognises the sound in print, and end with the spinner for spontaneous production.
